Whether you have a pet or not, you can help support the Finney County Humane Society animal care and programs by simply bringing your aluminum cans to the specially designated recycling bin located in the Builders FirstSource north parking lot at 1514 E. Fulton Street.
“Mike Cook, the general manager, has always been a big supporter of our humane society and he offered to move the bin to his business’s parking lot to provide more visibility,” said Amanda Licona, shelter manager. “It was originally located in front of our building and a lot of people didn’t know about it. With it now being on Fulton Street, it’s made a big difference in our recycling checks.”
Cook said he helped out with the recycle bin because it only made sense to him to provide the shelter’s container with better visibility and it provided him with an opportunity to help another business.
Set up specifically for just aluminum cans, the donations are taken to the F & F Recycling Center at 3710 Jones Avenue where the cans are weighed and, depending on the current commodities spot price, the shelter receives compensation for that poundage. Currently, the spot price is, according to the iScrap app, around 25 cents a pound.
Those dollars are usually put into the general fund or used to purchase vaccines, medications or supplies.
“We really appreciate the community’s efforts to not only recycle but to help us provide the care and programs to our many shelter animals,” Licona said. “We’re grateful for Mike’s and ProBuild’s generosity in relocating our bin and we encourage families, organizations and businesses to bring their aluminum cans to our site. It’s a win-win for animals and humans.”
